In a letter Varada Rajan sent to CPM general secretary Prakash Karat on December 19, just four days after receiving an enquiry report, he said “the findings of the enquiry cannot meet standards of justice and fairplay and need to be rejected.”

Facing allegations of misbehaving with a woman, believed to be in her forties, ‘WR’ as he was fondly called, denied the charges in the letter, explaining that the complaint was a fallout of the problems he faced in his own marital life.

“I assert that the allegations against me are frivolous, without any basis and not substantiated. The enquiry committee, which went into the complaints against me, had not followed a fair and transparent process. The disciplinary action proposed against me is uncalled for and unmerited. I place the facts and circumstances to vindicate my stand,” he said in the letter.

But the central committee that met in Kolkata in the first week of February ratified the decision to expel him from the central committee and state committee.

After returning to Chennai, WR sent an email on February 11 — the day he went missing — to those close to him from his oft-used id wrcpim@gmail.com: “I have exited. Please do not send mails on this id. Thanks. Varada Rajan WR.” Sources said he also left his phone at home, the Express report said.

Thackeray was granted bail by a judicial magistrate (first class) in Chopra area on a bond of Rs 7,000. He was accompanied by his lawyer Sayaji Nangre. The MNS chief was arrested on October 21, 2008 in in connection with a tirade launched by his party against north Indians.

In the case registered at the Chopra court, Raj has been booked under sections 143 (offence against public tranquility), 109 (abetment of offence), 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act which endangers human life) and 427 (mischief). Raj got the bail for all the offences.

The bail plea of Senior Vice President-cum-Global Head of Internal Audit Cell in Mahindra Satyam, V. S. Prabhakar Gupta, was also rejected by Justice P Swarup Reddy.

Gupta, who held the same position in the Satyam Computers Services Limited, was arrested on November 21 on charges of falsifying accounts and conspiring with other accused in the case.

In his bail application, Ramalinga Raju said the entire investigations in the Satyam case has been completed and that chargesheets were also filed.

As the chargesheet contains thousands of documents, he is not able to go through it and unable to meet his counsels to prepare for his defence due to his ill-health, Raju informed the court through his counsel.

Gupta also made a similar request to the court.

However, the CBI informed the High Court that granting of bail to the duo would hamper its investigation as it was awaiting additional reports from the courts in the UK, the US and some European countries on diversion of funds by the accused.

The judge later rejected the duo’s contention and observed that in view of the objection raised by the CBI and also considering the nature of the scam, he is not prepared to enlarge the petitioners on bail.

Ramalinga Raju was arrested in January last year after his admission of accounting fraud and since then he was in jail. Presently, he is undergoing treatment for his ailment at NIMS hospital in Hyderabad, according to Press Trust of India.

Ahuja, 36, has been charged with raping his 20-year-old domestic help at his Oshiwara residence on June 15 last year.

The court in Sewri yesterday framed charges against the actor under IPC sections 376 (rape), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

The actor pleaded not guilty to the charges and said he was ready to face the trial.

The prosecution has been asked to file a list of witnesses and documents on the basis of which it will argue its case on March 6.

Earlier, the Bombay High Court had stayed the framing of charges as the actor had asked for copies of documents and forensic reports. Now that the copies have been given to him, the trial is all set to begin.

The actor was arrested on June 15 last year after his maid servant lodged a police complaint alleging rape.

Ahuja had denied the charges and taken a stand that at the most the act could be termed as a consensual sex but not rape.

In August last year, Oshiwara police filed a 109-line page chargesheet that included statement of the complainant, forensic reports and other documents.

The case was committed to a fast track court on August 27 after Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said a special court would be set up to try the case faster.

Ahuja’s bail was rejected by the trial court following which he moved the High Court which granted him liberty subject to condition that he would remain in Delhi to avoid coming in contact with witnesses.

A Principal and Sessions Judge held the three accused in the infamous gang rape case and sentenced life imprisonment to the accused Sahid Syeed, Tariq Syeed and Abu Bakr Ismail.

The trio raped 17-year old class 12th schoolgirl around 5 a.m. on July 12, 2009 while she was on her way to the tuition. She was picked up by the accused in their car posing as police officials, who then raped her in the vehicle shocking the conscience of the people of the city.

The accused had also recorded the rape on their mobile phones. The three were however, arrested within hours of the incident.

The chargesheet in the case was filed on July 24, 2009. The hearing was scheduled on day-to-day basis.

The accused Shahid and Tariq are sons of police officials.

The city was on boil after the incident and circulation of MMS. There were protests in the city after the gang rape of a 17-year-old minor girl.

The court has completed the hearing time in record time and announced the verdict within a year of incident setting an example for others.

The ultras stormed the village on Wednesday night and burnt over 25 thatched houses and fired a hail of bullets killing the villagers.

The strike was said to be in retaliation against the recent killings of eight activists of the proscribed CPI (Maoist) allegedly by the villagers, according to leaflets left by the ultras at the spot.

Maoists had given a three-day bandh call in eastern part of Bihar to protest the killing of their activists. The bandh ended Wednesday midnight.

On Friday, Muthalik demanded justice saying the attack on him was an attack on democracy.

Muthalik has cried foul saying that the attack was pre-planned and that nobody has the right to take the law into their hands. However, he is still determined to protest the ‘Valentine’s Day’ celebrations.

Muthalik, got a taste of his own medicine when his face was blackened by the youths in the middle of an open air debate on Valentine’s Day hosted by a local TV channel in Bangalore.

Eyewitnesses claimed that several youths clambered on to the makeshift stage where the debate was being filmed and cornered Muthalik in his seat, pushing him to the ground and smearing his face with charcoal.

The youths later escaped before the police could swing into action. Muthalik had hit the headlines last year after his party men allegedly molested few women in a Mangalore pub saying that women should not go to pubs.

“In case of any damage caused by protestors, we will ensure that the victim gets the compensation. Section 51 and others of the Bombay Police Act, which will pave way for the victims to seek compensation, will be applied against the agitators,” Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Himanshu Roy said.

“Our utmost priority is to ensure everything goes fine and apply stern sections of the IPC, the Bombay Police Act and others against the troublemakers,” he said.

Meanwhile, police have arrested 665 more Shiv Sainiks on Friday morning as a preventive measure, taking the total number of the outfit’s workers put behind the bars to 2,665 since Tuesday.

The police arrested 24 Shiv Sainiks who protested outside Fun Cinemas in Chembur.

A large number of students blocked roads, demanding action against the centres for allegedly duping students and indulging in malpractices, police said.

Yesterday too students had blocked the Bazaar Samiti Road and demonstrated in front of the coaching centres alleging that their owners had duped them under the pretext of conducting courses.

The victim, who succumbed to injuries at a hospital, was accidentally fired upon by a guard posted in front of a institute, police said.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered an investigation into the incident and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1.5 lakh for the family of the deceased, identified as Sachin Sharma, according to reports reaching here.

The incident took place in Hanamkonda in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh.

Police said Nagaraju, teacher in a local school, allegedly attacked the boy with a knife at the latter’s house in Vikas Nagar in the presence of his mother who was alone at that time, media reports said.

The injured boy is battling for life at MGM Hospital in Warangal.

The boy’s mother Meena Kumari told police that Nagaraju had come home to demand the money he had lent to her husband Ailaiah, a watchman. Since Ailaiah was away she asked him to come later. However, the teacher requested for a glass of water. As she entered the kitchen, he allegedly attacked her son with a knife and ran away.
