Vighnesh Nagathan

The Miss World crown for 2011 has finally rested on the proud head of gorgeous Venezuelan beauty Ivian Sarcos. With around billion people on either side of the globe watching, Miss Venezuela shimmered wearing the invaluable tiara. A 21-year old HR graduate from Venezuela gasped at first and shed tears of joy when the judges named her winner of Miss World 2011 at Earls Court in London. Though beauty remains the main criteria – brains, skills and good causes also plays a chief role in determining the winner. And, Sarcos was worthy enough to be the winner.

Miss World 2011 Ivian Lunasol Sarcos Colmenares, in spite of having a troubled childhood, was able to make herself and her country proud for bringing home the Miss World honor. This is Venezuela’s sixth win. Home favorite Miss England, Alize Lily Mounter, won the complimentary title of beach beauty.
Ivian Sarcos was brought up in a nunnery after she was orphaned at the age of eight. She dropped plans of becoming a nun, after realizing the potential of her sensual appearance. She was working with a broadcasting company with a human resources degree when destiny walked up to her and presented her with the title of the 60th Miss World.
Sarcos was selected from the 122 contestants, and impressed judges with her wit, personality, and beauty. She stated that she wanted to work with non-governmental organizations for the good of under privileged children.
She was struggling with emotions when Miss World 2010, Alexandria Mills of the United States, crowned her and made her sit in the glistening silver throne.
London city was glinted for the gala event which returned to its home city where the first Miss World was staged in 1951. The first runner-up was Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Ruais. Another stunning beauty Amanda Vilanova, from Puerto Rico was declared the 2nd runner-up. The three top beauties will now travel around the planet promoting the motto ‘Beauty with a Purpose’.

Protests at the Wall Street are creating ripples across the

OPINION/ Aditya Divakaran

Protests at the Wall Street are creating ripples across the globe. Occupy Wall Street (OWS), a non leadership, demand-less protest against the monopoly of financial system by corporate and other lobbyist has had repercussions around the globe just in a mater of a month of its starting.

This movement has gathered support unofficially by Adbusters a Canadian-based not-for-profit, anti-consumerist, pro-environment organization. However, many other activist groups have joined later on.

OWS is an outright people-powered movement that began on September 17, 2011, in Liberty Square in Manhattan’s Financial District.
It has currently inspired similar protests in over 100 more cities in the United States including NYC. OWS protesters claim that this is the fight back of majority of the US populace, against major banks and multinational corporations, degrading the democratic system. Wall Street corporate and investment bankers are accused of playing major role in the recent recession. This is due to their role in directing the impact of recession solely on the US population and keeping their pockets safe.

The activists make it clear that they have been inspired by recent popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia. They are enraged by how the wealthiest one percent of the population is bending rules in their favor, thereby harming the global economy and future of the citizens. The protest till date has been peaceful and legal.

With the world economy predicted to witness yet another recession, the protest aims at sweeping away the corporate greed and lobbying climbing up the ladder. Social and economical inequality have created a vast void between rich and poor in the world, it is felt.

The movement has opened doors in many countries in Europe and Asia as well. Though the movement represents the sentiments of “we are the 99%”, it shamelessly lacks an alternate ideology or solutions for the change. It can be more described as a united sulk than a productive initiative.
Inspired by the Egyptian revolution of 2011 for democracy, this one wants to cut rising unemployment, anemic economic growth and inadvertent impacts of wars fought by the US. With high hopes about guaranteed economic growth by the freshly elected president turned out disappointing, citizens feel that their rulers are numb to their troubles.

However, this is a new type of movement, which the protesters have tactfully targeted on the private park grounds near the influential Wall Street.
European countries are right away inspired by this stride against greed and corruption. The streets of Madrid were packed with thousands Indignados (indignant) activists to protest against cutbacks to health and education spending, unemployment and corporate greed as part of a global day of protest.
This also motivated alike movements in Greece, Rome and Frankfurt. China also witnesses its people disparaging centralized wealth in Hong Kong.
However, India is most unlikely to witness such a mass movement as the country has already seen a definite movement against corruption under the leadership of Anna Hazare.
More than 1500 cities in 82 countries around the globe are currently witnessing protests. On October 15 around one month after the start of protest, remonstrations were held from North and South America to Asia, Africa and Europe as part of a global day of action.
Many famous personalities who has come forward supporting the movement includes Naomi Klein, Julian Assange, Michael Moore, Glen Beck and many more.

Though the reasons for the protest are wide and clear, the aim of the protest still seems vague. Another main back-puller is lack of a bolstering leadership and an endpoint to protest. Likelihood for this movement for being another one of the urge to-part-of-making-history movement cannot be neglected as well.
Even though the movement has garnered attention and support from American citizens, confusions regarding the ado are still lingering in their psyche, which can be counter-productive.

The decision comes following the Chinese move on Net freedom restrictions and censorships. Go Daddy and Network Solutions LLC are the two companies announcing that they are exiting China
While Go Daddy, which runs the world’s largest domain name service, has said it will no longer register new web sites in China, Network Solutions has said it has already stopped handling China Web registrations in December. Both the companies attribute their decision to China’s new website ownership rules, which require holders of .cn domains to provide their personal information, including photographs of themselves to the Chinese government.
Go Daddy has in fact become the first Internet major to publicly follow Google’s example in responding to the Chinese government’s censorship of the Internet by partially retreating from the Chinese government.

vIndianz.com (19 Jan, 2010) — London/New Delhi: Outgoing National Security Advisor (NSA)

vIndianz.com (19 Jan, 2010) — London/New Delhi: Outgoing National Security Advisor (NSA) M. K. Narayanan has on Monday is quoted as saying in a British paper that Chinese hackers have tried to penetrate computers in the NSA office.

Not just NSA office, other governmental offices were targeted on Dec 15, the same date that US defence, finance and technology companies, including Google, reported cyber attacks from China.

NSA Narayanan who is taking over as West bengal governor soon, told The Times, London said: “This was not the first instance of an attempt to hack into our computers.” He added that the would-be hackers sent an e-mail with a PDF attachment containing a Trojan virus.

The virus (allows hackers to download or delete files) was detected and officials were advised not to log on until it was eliminated, Narayanan said.

“People seem to be fairly sure it was the Chinese. It is difficult to find the exact source but this is the main suspicion. It seems well founded,” The Times report said.

The NSA also said that India was cooperating with the US and Britain to bolster its cyber defences.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government has denied any role in the attacks.

Narayanan also said that while he expected China to be an increasingly high security priority for India, the main threat still came from militants based in Pakistan.

He said Islamabad had done nothing to dismantle militant groups since the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and criticised Britain for accepting its excuse that such groups were beyond its control.

Narayanan told the UK newspaper that India is anxious to prevent an attack from Pakistan during the Commonwealth Games in October this year.

vIndianz.com (30 Nov, 2009) — India has stopped up work on a road in Leh subsequent to the objections raised by the Chinese Army. Nearly half of the 8-km long road had by now been constructed under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) prior to the work was stopped.

Although the road is in Demchok area of south-east Leh of Ladakh and well within the Indian side on the Line of Actual Control but objections by the Chinese Army enforced the Jammu and Kashmir government to discontinue work on the development.

“This road is especially much below our territory. Indo-Tibetan Border Police is too conscious of the road. Local residents are disappointed with Chinese army coming to our region,” said Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Chering Dorjay told CNN-IBN.

Demchok is the final populated region on the Line of Actual Control. The road was being constructed to perk up connectivity in the region and to offer employment to local residents. China has a related road on the other side to which India did not point.

vIndianz.com (24 Nov, 2009) — China executed two men on Tuesday for their participation in the contamination of milk products that killed at least six Chinese infants and sickened about 300,000 other children.

The municipal court in Shijiazhuang, in an announcement cited by the state news agency Xinhua, said Zhang Yujun was executed for manufacturing and selling hundreds of tons of toxic protein powder, and Geng Jinping was put to death for selling over 900 tons of contaminated milk.

Dairy producers and middlemen laced milk, milk powders and infant formula with an industrial chemical, melamine, usually used in production of plastics, fertilizer and pesticides. The melamine was added to trick inspectors into thinking the milk was high in protein. But the chemical caused kidney stones, kidney failure and additional health problems. Children were the most gravely affected.

Mr. Geng sold his milk to the Sanlu Group, the dairy corporation at the center of the scandal and the largest of 22 companies that were finally implicated in the poisonings. News of the scandal broke in September of last year.

Sanlu, which was bankrupted by the matter, was based in Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province in northern China. The former chairwoman of the Sanlu board, Tian Wenhua, was sentenced to life in prison.

Xinhua said 21 people have been tried and convicted this year in association with the milk scandal: Mr. Zhang and Mr. Geng were sentenced to death and one more man received a suspended death sentence. Mrs. Tian and two others got life sentences and 15 received jail terms of between 2 and 15 years.

The government said the 22 companies that sold the tainted products have decided to compensate most affected families, paying amounts ranging from $290 to $29,000, depending on how badly children were sickened.

vIndianz.com (30 Oct, 2009) — India and its neighbors require to “overcoming the load of times gone by” to attain peace, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh believed here on Friday and further added that he wished victory to Islamabad in its battle in opposition to terror.

Talking at the opening session of the annual HT Leadership Summit here on Friday, Manmohan Singh articulated the expectation that democracy would take deeper roots in all the neighboring countries.

“I believe Pakistan is grappling with many domestic troubles… terrorism is one of them and I hope for victory in that. And without going into larger particulars, I would like to state that as I mentioned yesterday (Thursday) and day before yesterday the destinies of our two countries, and certainly the destinies of all countries of South Asia are strongly interlinked,” said Manmohan Singh.

Stressing that India required excellent relationships with all its neighbours, the prime minister said: “We genuinely wish to decide all outstanding issues with our neighbours in the course of conversation… that should distinguish our associations.”

His remarks come two days after he presented Pakistan a “hand of friendship” in the Kashmir Valley. “There are difficulties in increasing areas of collaboration, but they have to be conquered. And I suppose it is for the leadership of all countries to create the future happen,” said Manmohan Singh.

“We (want) to survive in peace with our neighbours and world generally. We wish to stay as good neighbours and good global nation. We look for good relations with each one of them (neighboring countries)…” the Prime Minister added.

vIndianz.com (29 Oct, 2009) — The IMF held on Thursday the economies of India, China and Australia were recuperating particularly fast, signifying it notices rising pressures for authorities there to stiffen monetary policy in front of others in the section.

“In only some unique cases…the revival is advancing so swiftly that production gaps are by now starting to shut and pressures are already rising,” the International Monetary Fund said in a regional economic outlook report, released in Seoul.

It called the three economies unique cases, at the same time adding a tightening of monetary policy appeared pointless elsewhere in the area in the in the vicinity of future.

It is too advised Asian central banks not to elevate interest rates just too tranquil asset price increase, saying lifting rates ahead of advanced economies could magnetize “carry trade-type” capital inflows and worsen asset price pressures.

“For all these reasons, it would appear preferable, at least originally, to tackle incipient asset price pressures through besieged prudential actions rather than the blunt instrument of monetary policy,” it said.

The Washington-based organization did not state economies facing predominantly grave asset price pressures.

PM Manmohan Singh is expected to get together his Chinese equivalent Wen

PM Manmohan Singh is expected to get together his Chinese equivalent Wen Jiabao on Saturday, hopeful to extinguish a mounting verbal battle among the Asian giants centered about their decades-old border quarrel.

The conference on the sidelines of a regional summit in Thailand would be the initial high-level contact between the two nations following recent months of political barbs led to extraordinary levels of tension and uncertainties that the opposition might spin out of control.

Relations have warmed in recent years, generally on the back of reciprocal trade anticipated to pass $60 billion next year, a 30-fold increase since the year 2000.

But tensions have risen in the previous few months accompanied by reports in Indian media of Chinese border incursions, and an opposition by Beijing to Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama’s planned visit next month to Arunachal Pradesh that China claims as its individual territory.

“The visit of the Dalai Lama is seen as not only reinforcing India’s claim on Arunachal Pradesh, but also boosting the Tibetan struggle by undermining Chinese territorial integrity,” said Bhaskar Roy, a New Delhi-based strategic analyst on China.

And Beijing would like to make sure that this latest age group of Tibetan exiles based in northern India is not used as a bargaining fragment by New Delhi in future, analysts say.

“All of this is reflected in its reaction to its failure to assimilate Tibet,” said strategic analyst Prem Shankar Jha.

Joint distrust lingers from a short war the two sides fought in 1962 and the existence of the Dalai Lama in India bothers Beijing, as does India’s increasing dealings with the United States.

“This meeting would be about building confidence that has taken a knock in recent months — weeding out misapprehensions, clearing of the air,” Roy said.

The two sides have too struggled to resolve their border disagreement. Every side claims vast swathes of the other’s province all along their 3,500-km (2,173-mile) Himalayan border.

China puts down claim to 90,000 sq km of land on the eastern division of the border in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. India says China inhabits 38,000 square km (15,000 square miles) of region in Aksai Chin plateau.

Although a fresh war is very improbable, the troubled border between the world’s two most heavily populated countries has the prospective to stimulate tensions destabilizing additional a region already roiled.

“I wish to point out that at present Chinese-Indian relations have maintained a healthy direction of development,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said on Tuesday.
