vIndianz.com (24 Nov, 2009) — In the coming future, DNA samples of each Indian citizen will be with the authorities. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Gandhinagar has been entrusted with the assignment of preparing a DNA database that will provide as model for other labs across the country.

Drawing encouragement from the DNA database models of US and British investigation agencies, experts at the FSL are busy preparing software to store DNA samples. The laboratory has received a grant of Rs 1.4 crore and the system hopes that a well tested software and a DNA sample model database will be prepared in the next 18 months.

“We will establish a model DNA database laboratory. It will be a model that all the labs of the country will have to follow,” said Director, FSL, J M Vyas.

In the first stage, sorting of DNA samples will be completed for criminals, habitual offenders and accused. DNA samples of jail inmates, under trials and convicts will also be stored. The government will too gather DNA samples of the castes and tribes recognized to have criminal history.

It will be significant for the FSL to get most samples at the earliest as DNA fingerprinting has become an imperative technique to determine fault or innocence of suspects. In the longer run though, this data may be used to examine severe offences and terror activities.
