vIndianz.com (20 Jan, 2010) — Berlin: Scientists in Freiburg, Germany, have developed an extremely responsive, miniaturized mobile ozone sensor that can be used not just in air, but also in water and in the locality of explosive gases.

mobileOzone is a potent oxidizing agent and can cause an extensive assortment of symptoms in humans, including lacrimation, irritation of the mucous membranes in the mouth, throat, and bronchial tubes, headaches, coughing and even worsening in lung function.

The major sources of ozone pollution are industrial and transport emissions. Mainly in warmer weather conditions, these respond with intensive UV radiation to shape ground-level ozone.

But laser printers and copiers, machines so common in modern-day offices, can in addition emit ozone.

The European Commission has announced its target to cut the guideline value for ozone in the air from the present level of 90 parts per billion to 60 parts per billion by 2010, and when this latest guideline comes into power, there will be an augmented demand for economical ozone sensors.

But, according to project manager Dr. Volker Cimalla of the IAF, “Since ozone is, at the same time, an agent with high application prospective, novel sensors are necessary, which have to be compact and reasonably priced.”
