vIndianz.com (Dec. 03, 2009) — Meeting the demand for family planning in poor nations is a inexpensive and successful way to reduce CO2 emissions, a latest website proposal claims.
The UK-based Optimum Population Trust says fast-rising population levels lead to rising emissions of CO2. The website is urging and appealing the affluent people to compensate their own CO2 emissions by backing contraception programmes.
It says taking such act is better worth than spending money on wind turbines, solar power or hybrid cars. Critics would disagree the investigation is too naive, an expert says.
The environment analyst Roger Harrabin says they can challenge that reducing the number of people born in the US would make a large distinction in achieving reductions in CO2 levels.
Our correspondent added that carbon emissions from people in most of sub-Saharan Africa are so small that they can hardly be counted. According to the OPT, each £4 used up on family planning saves one tonne of CO2.
It estimates that a related lessening would need an £8 investment in tree planting, £15 in wind power, £31 in solar energy and £56 in hybrid vehicle technology.
It is promoting a proposal in which wealthy people can compensate their own carbon emissions by backing contraceptive programmes in the developing world.
