vIndianz.com (22 Mar, 2010) Islamabad: In a departure from its earlier stand, the US is ready to discuss Pakistan’s request for nuclear power plants at the strategic meeting between the two sides.
According to media reports from the US, US envoy in Islamabad Anne W Patterson has been quoted as saying that a discussion will be kicked off with the Pakistan government on the country’s desire to tap nuclear energy. This could mean that though America’s non-proliferation concerns were quite severe, attitudes in Washington were changing. The US has said that there is a broad and complex agenda in these talks, and this is the first strategic dialogue ever at this level. The US might consider the request.
It may be noted that the US had earlier said that the deal for supplying nuclear power plants to India was exclusive to New Delhi and could not be offered to another country.
