Owner of popular ‘voice’ in Radio and TV, Glen Beck has recently released a book intended for young readers. It was a pleasant surprise for all that hugely political and somber commentator Glenn has turned to children’s book zone. We don’t know what triggered this switch in him. He might have thought that ‘change should be made from roots’, or it could be the tender affection of a grandfather in him which made him write this book. This book is a follow-up on his 2009 kid’s book, The Christmas Sweater, which was a best-seller.
Beck is not the only celebrity who has tried his/her hand at penning stories for kids. Many films stars, politicians, singers and royal family members also have written books for kids. Hereunder is the list of ten such authors and their books.
H.R.H Charles, Prince of Wales: The Old Man of Lochnagar
Heir apparent of UK and the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, H.R.H. Charles, is also a good writer. The Old Man of Lochnagar was, reportedly, written by the Prince to entertain his brothers when they were young. The cover of the book is illustrated by Sir Hugh Casson.
Barack Obama: Of Thee I Sing
Barack Obama was not new to writing. The first Black President of America had written the famous “Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance”, a memoir, more than a decade before he became the First Man of America. However, his new book for children was published just before he became President. The publisher states that it is “a moving tribute to thirteen groundbreaking Americans and the ideals that have shaped our nation.’’ Read it to know what Obama wants for his daughters — and every child in America.
Sting: Rock Steady: A Story of Noah’s Ark
One of the most expensive stars in the music world — Sting — brings to life, for kids, one of his songs in a picture book. He has made his own tweak to the well-known Bible story for the reading pleasure of kids. We have never known that Sting has a different dimension in writing — other than penning down beautiful lyrics.
Julianne Moore: Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully
Julianne Moore, popular actress, has, from the very beginning of her career, shown her flair for writing. She has published two children’s books. The first book, Freckleface Strawberry, is based on her experiences as a child, which is followed two years later by Dodgeball Bully.
Madonna: The English Roses: Catch the Bouquet
Madonna is essentially a multi-tasking lady as we know her. But we never knew that she had it in her to write books for tender ages. Her first of five book series, The English Roses, was published in 2003. The plot revolves around the lives of English school girls. It became one of the fastest- selling children’s books of all times.
Queen Latifah: Queen of the Scene
This American singer, rapper and actress knows more than anybody else the problems of self-esteem and confidence faced by children of different shapes and sizes. She wants to empower and reassure the children and help them walk through life with their head held high.
Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York: Little Red: Autumn Adventure
Popularly known as Fergie, she is not someone who is new to writing. In fact, she has written many books dedicated to kid readers. Her “Little Red: Autumn Adventure” is the most popular of all. The former royal member has since been very active in writing books for young generation.
Michael Phelps: How to Train with a T.Rex and Win 8 Gold Medals
Sixteen Olympic Medals winner, American swimmer Michael Phelps has found his time to inspire the younger generation by writing a short book. He has co-written the book with Alan Abrahamson, with whom he has also written a book for grown-ups, “No Limits: The Will to Succeed”
Will Smith: Just the Two of Us
Will Smith is outright a family man. We all know he loves his son very much and has not been much bashful in showing it. He has done a video album and a film (Pursuit of Happiness) with his young son. He has written a book “Just the Two of Us” following the lines of his video album with his son, of the same name. An ideal gift for Father’s Day!
John Travolta: Propeller One-Way Night Coach
Who thought that this foul-mouthed and beefy villain/hero (dancer and singer as well!) has a panache for writing books! He describes the book as ‘a fable for all ages’. It was originally written by Travolta for his child. The plot talks about a young boy whose first trip on an airplane changes his life forever.
