vIndianz.com (Oct. 21, 2009) — In a hinder for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Karunanidhi, the Supreme Court has refused to settle the verdict on review for a new dam across the Mullaperiyar River.
Tamil Nadu had stimulated the Supreme Court demanding the Centre’s permission to Kerala to carry out an investigation in the Periyar Tiger Reserve for the building of a new dam across the Mullaperiyar River. Tamil Nadu had sought continue on the survey, which the court refused on Wednesday.
Although the dam is situated in Kerala, according to a 999-year lease agreement signed prior to Independence, water for irrigation has to be given to Tamil Nadu.
Kerala has contended that the vulnerability of the dam is an issue of anxiety and is causing fear and fright. Kerala has been challenging the construction of a new dam at the site, which Tamil Nadu opposes.
Karunanidhi has been below demands back home after the Union Environment Ministry permitted Kerala to take on a survey for construction of a new dam. His bête noire and Leader of Opposition in the state J Jayalalithaa lately accused him of functioning on the issue, saying the DMK should not carry on in the Manmohan-Singh-led UPA government at the Centre if it cannot guarantee the state’s welfare.
Karunanidhi has safeguarded himself saying he has on paper to both the Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh saying Kerala should not be permissible to undertake the survey without looking for Tamil Nadu’s opinion and to the Prime Minister, seeking his involvement.
