vIndianz.com (04 Jan, 2010) — Hyderabad: Anti-Telengana protests today spilled over yet again with Rayalaseema and Andhra regions in the troubled Andhra Pradesh state witnessing complete shutdown. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising student groups and political parties, including the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), have called for a strike today.
Significantly enough, the agitation has made a come back to Telangana after the Centre made a second statement on December 23 saying the issue needed wider consultations. The shutdown call by Telengana opposing groups comes on the eve the all-party meet called by the Centre on the Telangana issue. Buses belonging to the state Road Transport Corporation and also private operators stayed off the road, while it was shutters down at almost all shops, banks, petrol pumps, movie halls and educational institutions.
Vishakhapatnam’s IT companies were at the risk of being attacked, but untoward incidents have so far not been reported thanks to the additional security provided to the IT companies. Police resorted to provided added security after the IT sector voiced its concern over frequent shutdowns and protests in the state, said a report.
Regular life was disrupted in non-Telangana regions of Andhra Pradesh on Monday due to a Bandh called by the All party Joint Action Committee (JAC) in support of United Andhra Pradesh.
“We called for a total Bandh to convey a point to the Center that greater segment of people wants a United Andhra Pradesh,” Prof Samuel, Convenor of Samkhya Andhra (United Andhra Pradesh) JAC told reporters in Vijayawada.
Schools, colleges, shops and other business establishments remained stopped up.
The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) suspended its services across Telangana and coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema areas as a preventive measure.
In Chittoor district, apart from buses going to the temple town of Tirupati, all other services remained cancelled. In Vijayawada, ex- mayor Mallika Begum and a few other leaders were taken into detention by the police as they tried to hold a remonstration.
“We caution the Centre that they should not make any hurried declaration. We will carry out our next meeting in favor of United Andhra Pradesh in Hyderabad also,” TDP MLA D Umamaheswara Rao said.
The JAC has called for a rail roko (stop the trains) in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema on Tuesday, to correspond with the important meeting convened by the Centre to discuss the Telangana matter in New Delhi.
The Telangana JAC has in addition called for rail and rasta roko (road blockade) in Telangana district.
