(vIndianz, May 22 2010): An Air India Express aircraft from Dubai went past a runway and crashed outside the Mangalore airport on May 22 leaving 160 people dead.

There are five to six survivors who have been taken to the hospital. The plane crash occurred around 6:30 am.
According to Airport official, Peter Abraham, the rescue work is on. The aircraft was a Boeing 737- 800 carrying 166 people on board, including six crewmembers. The passengers included four infants too. The reports say that it struck a forest area and flames were seen coming from the plane. Rohit Katyar, a top airport security official, has been quoted as saying the plane apparently surpassed the runway and has crashed.
The Mangalore airport has a tabletop runway that is it is located on a hilltop and it requires complete accuracy while landing. The sources reported that the pilot did not report any malfunction to the Airport Traffic Control (ATC). Villagers from the neighborhood were among the first to rush to the ravine as the plane crashed and broke into several pieces and huge flames were seen soaring into the sky. Firemen and rescue team from the airport quickly began rescue operations. A television channel showed a fireman carrying distorted pieces of a child.
The police have said that the aircraft broke into pieces and fire engulfed the plane. About 25 ambulances were involved in rescue operations.
