vIndianz.com (16 Jan, 2010) — New Delhi: National Security Adviser, M. K. Narayanan is being appointed Governor of West Bengal, top sources said on Saturday.
Former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil who like Narayanan was in the top seat during the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai in 2008 will be the Governor in Punjab.
Former Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt has been chosen for Chhattisgarh from where E.S.L. Narasimhan moves to Andhra Pradesh Raj Bhavan, the source said.
Senior Congress leader Mohsina Kidwai will be the new Governor of Jharkhand from where K. Sankaranarayan is being shifted to Maharashtra.
Himachal Pradesh Governor Prabha Rau is being moved to Rajasthan from Himachal Pradesh where senior Congress leader from Gujarat and former Union minister Urmilaben Patel will be the new incumbent.
The names of Governors, which were cleared at a meeting between Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday, have been forwarded to the Rashtrapati Bhavan by the Home Ministry.
The appointment of 75-year-old Narayanan, a former IB chief, creates a vacancy in the NSA’s post for which former Foreign Secretaries Shyam Saran and Shivshankar Menon are believed to be the front runners.
Narayanan, 75, completed five years stint as NSA and he faced criticism for mishandling the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks by the Islamic terrorists last year.
The post of NSA was created during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1998.
West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi demitted office recently after completing his tenure.
The fresh appointment in the Raj Bhavans are rushed before January 26 so that the governors are in place to take the salute in the the Republic Day parades in these state capitals, according to Indian news agency Press Trust of India.
