(vIndianz May 29 2010): The Suzuki Jimny (Gypsy) has got long years of story to tell while celebrating its 40th anniversary. The Maruti Gypsy was launched as four-wheel drive SUV and was named as Jimny Sierra.

Maruti Suzuki manufactured it in India and launched in the markets in 1970. It was the most affordable 4X4 vehicle then. It had an air-cooled, 360cc two-stroke engine and a ladder frame chassis. Its agile weight and size makes it easy for taking around even on unpaved roads, sand, mud and any type of terrain. Around 188 countries have seen and driven in the Jimny.

The second generation Gypsy was internationally debuted in 1981 and it was launched in the Indian markets in 1985. The second generation or Suzuki SJ series was launched in 1981 in Japan and later in India. The SJ series had many names including Suzuki Samurai, Suzuki Sierra, Maruti Gypsy and many others. The vehicle caught the attention of many car lovers and had a huge fan following. But modern day buyers were not convinced in buying a 20-year old vehicle. Purchasing a vehicle can be a lengthy process, and buyers often want to take a test drive and read more than one summary of car insurance to make sure they are getting the best deal possible. This has made car manufacture an extremely competitive field. The Maruti had to find ways in bringing changes in the model, rather than investing in the existing models. They had to bring in a latest generation vehicle.

The major complaints of the vehicle were poor fuel consumption and poor ride quality especially in the rear seats. Despite these cons, the Gypsy is a very capable off-roader and is still used by boarder security forces and police forces. In Civilian use, the gypsy is the major choice as a low cost SUV. The car’s reliability and capability to drive on any terrain makes the vehicle outstanding. The Gypsy was exported to countries like Chile and Kenya. The next generation Jimny should come out within a year’s time and it is essential for Maruti to launch a device for its Indian entry. It’s the time when Mini SUV’s are turning out to be popular and many other companies are all set to launch their products like the Mahindra’s mini SUV to be launched the next decade. The Ford, Tata and many others are all ready to join the race.
