vIndianz.com (20 Oct, 2009) — A labor strike in Gurgaon-based auto component factory in the state of Haryana turned quite violent on Tuesday with more than one lakh worker’s protesting and boycotting work in 60 companies in the automobile sector.
The strike was called by the All India Trade Union Congress to dispute alleged police inaction in labor unrest that lead to death of one worker and six people being injured. Though a case of murder has been registered by the Gurgaon Police, hundreds of striking workers at RICO, the auto-parts producing unit, sat down outside gate of the factory in protest.
They claimed, the management for being responsible for triggering the aggression and violence on Sunday evening.
SS Deswal, Gurgaon Police Commissioner had earlier told to a news channel that “the worker’s strike” is illegitimate and we have given them repetitive warnings to go away from the place. We have sufficient police presence to manage the situation.”
RICO has been seeing labor unrest for over a month. The workers want to form a union, the management hasn’t been paying heed to their demands by stating that workers have already received pay hikes and the unit is constantly seeing low productivity.
Late on Sunday, a clash broke out between workers who were on strike and those who wanted to work. The entire episode broke out of control and violent leading to death of a worker.
About 3,500 workers were on strike in the RICO factory, it is amongst the largest industrial strikes in recent times bringing production at the automobile hub of Manesar to a standstill.
Nevertherless, Maruti Suzuki was comparatively insulated from this strike; the strike also disrupted the traffic movement in Delhi-Jaipur National Highway-8.
Under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner Pushpender Chouhan, a four-member committee was set up to resolve the dispute between the management and labor union.
