India pays reverence to 26/11 victims, martyrs

vIndianz.com (26 Nov, 2009) — India is paying respect and reverence to the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai bloodshed on its first anniversary. One year ago on November 26, 2008, 10 Pakistani terrorists held Mumbai captive for almost 60 hours assassinating more than 170 people and injured more than 300, many of them foreigners.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Home Minister RR Patil and Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal paid reverence at the Oberoi Trident Hotel, which was amongst the places attacked by the terrorists. At 0800 hrs IST Mumbai Police began a flag march from Nariman point to Chowpatty.

Combat mobile vehicles of Mumbai police, rapid intervention vehicles, amphibious vehicles, sea raced amphibian marine craft; armored group carrier, high end BDDS bomb detection and disposal squad, the rapid response team commando and a fleet of armored bullet proof vehicles are taking part in the flag march.

Maharashtra’s special force created to battle terror attacks “Force One drill” is too representing a counter terrorism drill to fight the attacks at the Oberoi Trident. The Force One special drill to combat terrorism drill at Oberoi Trident is known as “Exterior Room Intervention”.

Mumbai’s well-known landmarks like the Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital, Oberoi Trident, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, Nariman House fell victim to the Pakistan based Lashkar-e-Toiba operatives.

A number of courageous officers of the Mumbai Police force like Joint Commissioner of Police, Anti-Terrorist Squad, Hemant Karkare, Police Inspector, Anti Extortion Cell, Vijay Salaskar and Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte became victim to the bullets.

National Security Guards and Marine Commandos were summoned to bring the circumstances under control. The NGS too lost its two personnel, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and Commando Gajendra Singh.

The day is a mark of respect to all those martyrs who gave up their lives to make sure others could live to tell their tales and a salutation to the gallantry of those who survived.
