vIndianz, May 24 2010): The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) will be rolled out in time for the 2011 World Cup in the subcontinent. The decision was taken at the annual meeting at Lord’s and it was also recommended that it be introduced as soon as possible in all the test series and also throughout next year’s World Cup in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

As in Test cricket, each team will be allowed two referrals per innings. The committee, controlled by the former West Indies captain, Clive Lloyd, also decided to re-examine the laws that were pitted against the fielding side. The system was introduced as trial since 2008 but was baited with controversies and technological problems. The ICC’s broadcasters, ESPN Star Sports must agree to implement the system.
All the teams and umpires, however, have not welcomed this system. It landed in controversy in January during the Johannesburg Test between South Africa and England when the television umpire Daryl Harper failed to overturn a not out decision against South African captain Graeme Smith because Daryl failed to turn up the sound on an audio feed from the stump microphone. To avoid such problems in the future the committee recommended introduction of technologies like ball-tracking technology, including in the third umpire room and annual reviews of technology and equipments. The ICC said the bowler could decide not to bowl if he sees a batsman change his grip before entering his delivery stride. It was also decided that if a batsman was seen trying to steal ground when the bowler is running into bowl could be discouraged. The ICC also recommended a research in the reduction in the number of teams in the World Cup but more in the Twenty20 tourney.
