vindianz.com (Dec. 05, 2009) — Senior Hurriyat Conference leader Fazal Haq Qureshi, who was attacked just outside his house by anonymous men in Srinagar on Friday, continues to be serious, doctors attending on him said Sunday.
A group of doctors who examined the 66-year old, who is on life support system in the Soura medical institute, described his state as critical.
“There is no worsening, but there is no development either. It is a status-quo situation,” a senior doctor told IANS. “Our expectation is he might do well. We are frequently monitoring his state.”
Qureshi was attacked on Friday evening close to his house while he was leaving the mosque after offering evening prayers in the Soura locality of the capital city.
A squad of doctors operated upon Qureshi on Friday night as he was brought to the institute minutes after the assault. Together mainstream and separatist leaders have been visiting the hospital and the Soura home of Qureshi to enquire about his state.
Qureshi, a senior leader of the moderate Hurriyat group headed by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, favored a negotiated settlement of the Kashmir subject and sought after a dialogue with New Delhi.
The challenge on his life is seen as an aggressive warning to the moderate Hurriyat group against talks with the central government. The executive committee of the Hurriyat Conference met here Saturday evening and reiterated that “the leadership won’t be cowed down by such dishonorable attacks and efforts will carry on finding a resolution to the Kashmir issue through dialogue”.
