vIndianz.com (16 Dec, 2009) — Bringing respite to the working class of the nation facing an extraordinary price rise, the government has decided to hike the minimum wages to Rs 100 from existing Rs 80 per day.
“The decision to hike minimum wages to Rs 100 per day would be implemented with retrospective effect from November 1, 2009,” a Labor Ministry source said.
“The national floor labor minimum wage has been revised from November 1 on the basis of ensuing consumer price index,” the source said.
As a result, the Ministry has asked states and Union Territories to “fix and modify minimum rates of wages” so as to make sure that in none of the planned employment, the minimum wages are less than Rs 100 per day, the source said.
The advance comes in the background of increasing demand from the working class to appraise the income, which was last revised in 2007 from Rs 56 to Rs 80. a number of trade unions had made representations demanding a hike in minimum wage.
