vIndianz.com (Dec. 02, 2009) — It’s an account that is Kolkata’s disgrace.
At 6 am on Wednesday, passersby saw stray dogs pulling two tiny bodies from the trash dump close to the prominent Shamubnath Pandit Hospital. They supposedly shared the dreadful information with the Superintendent of the hospital. No action was taken.
For the next eight hours, the foetuses lay on the road. One was totally devoured by stray dogs; the other was left half-eaten.
Lastly, members of the BJP arrived at the place of instantly recognizable disgust, and started protesting. Locals say it was just after this that the police arrived to take away the foetuses.
There are contradictory theories on why the foetuses were lying in the trash dump. The Shambunath Hospital says they were left here by a local nursing home, and were not discarded by either its employees or its patients.
The hospital superintendent, who was gheraoed, has now promised an inquiry. But his supposed insensitivity and that of the police, which took hours to arrive to the spot, has left the city in shock. More disgraceful, maybe, is the shocking reality that no one in the neighborhood tried to either stop the dogs, or to take away the foetuses themselves.
