vIndianz.com (20 Oct 2009) — The eligibility criteria of 60% marks in class- 12th to appear for IIT Joint Engineering Examination just became more tougher since it is going to be raised from the coming the academic year. This has been done to make the students pay more attention to their board exams rather than only entrance exams. In this vital move to keep a check on the growth of coaching centers that is blooming on imparting coaching to students for IIT-JEE the government decided today to modify the criteria, so that student’s attention will be more focused and concentrated on the board exams at Class-12th”. The current criterion is that students must secure 60% marks in their class 12th to appear for IIT-JEE.

HRD minister Kapil Sibal told reporters today after a meeting of IIT council, the top decision making body for such prestigious institutes that “minimum marks needed for IIT-JEE could be raised up to 80 to 85%.” He said that the three-member committee has been set up to look into the syllabus and the IIT-JEE system and present its details in three months, signifying necessary changes.

The committee comprises Science and Technology Secretary T Ramasamy, Secretary Department of Biotechnology M K Bhan and Director General CSIR Sameer Brhmachari. “The coaching centers are giving training for the IIT entrance.”

Consequently, the students are not studying sincerely for Class-XII exam and giving more concentration to entrance. We would like to get free of the coaching centers by giving more weightage to the board exam,” Sibal said.
