vIndianz.com (22 Dec, 2009) — Delhiites experienced a cold morning today with mercury plunging to the season’s lowest of 6.4 degree Celsius due to snowfall in higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir valley.

Today’s minimum is two degrees lower than standard for this time of the year. Yesterday, the least was 7.4 degree Celsius whereas on Sunday it was 8.4 degree.

“The snowfall in higher in upper reaches of Himachal and Kashmir has brought down the temperature,” a Met official said.

The city was swept by chilly winds in the early hours this morning.

A thin layer of fog too engulfed the city skyline in the morning reducing the visibility to 1,000 metres. Although, flight movement was not affected due to the fog. The temperature in the capital had been oscillating between seven and 25 degrees Celsius in the previous week.

The Weatherman has predicted mist in the morning with maximum and minimum expected to linger approximately 21 and six degrees Celsius respectively tomorrow.

In 2008, the lowest minimum of the month was 6.4 degree Celsius recorded on December 26 while in 2007; it was 3.9 degrees on December 29. The record for 2006 was 7.3 degree Celsius on November 29.

The unsurpassed record for minimum temperature was recorded on December 26 of 1945 when the mercury dipped to 1.1 degree Celsius.
