vIndianz.com (Nov. 30, 2009) — The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) 12-hour blackout to dissent the increase in prices impacted life in numerous parts of West Bengal on Monday with supporters stopping public transport, vandalizing private vehicles and jamming main roads.
The dawn-to-dusk shutdown affected life in Kolkata in addition to adjoining Howrah district. Police said BJP workers blocked public transport vehicles and confirmed on Howrah Bridge, disturbing traffic movement throughout peak office hours.
The movement of trains was too affected. At the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport, pre-paid taxis kept back off the roads.
Fourteen BJP activists were under arrest for staging a barricade near the busy Rabindra Sadan crossing in central Kolkata and a few were from Howrah district for staging a sit-in, police said.
The activists also apparently ransacked different offices at Rajarhat, including in the IT Sector at Salt Lake.
“We’ve called the 12-hour blackout in West Bengal protesting the price rise of necessary commodities and electricity prices. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government is completely unresponsive about these essential issues,” BJP state vice president Sabyasachi Bagchi told IANS.
Answering a question on the damage by hundreds BJP activists across the state in the name of supporting the strike, he said: “Some dreadful elements are constantly there and they create turbulence to common people. We’re not supporting it.
