(vIndianz June 7 2010): All the eight accused including former chairman of Union Carbide, Keshub Mahindra, have been convicted to two years imprisonment by a Bhopal court in the Bhopal gas tragedy case. The verdict brings to end long 26 years of wait, after tragedy struck on 2 December, 1984 killing more than 35,000 people till date.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the eight, including Keshub Mahindra, former head of the Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL). A fine of Rs. 5 lakh has been imposed on UCIL
Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohan P. Tiwari on Monday convicted former Chairman of Union Carbide India Keshub Mahindra, then Production Assistant S.I. Quereshi, then Production Manager S.P. Choudhary, then Plant Superintendent K.V. Shetty, then Manager J.N. Mukund, then Vice president Kishore Kumar and then Managing Director of the company Vijay Gokhale. The ninth accused R.B. Roychoudhary had died during the course of trial, said reports. The accused were convicted under sections 304-A (causing death by negligence), 304(II) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 336, 337 and 338 (gross negligence) of IPC. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed the chargesheet on December 1, 1987 in the case wherein the First Information Report (FIR) had been lodged three years earlier on December 3, 1984.
Meanwhile, Warren Anderson, the then Chairman of Union Carbide Corporation of the US, who was declared an absconder after he did not subject himself to trial in the case that began 23 years ago, found no mention in the judgment.
