(vIndianz May 28, 2010): Mumbai-bound Gyaneshwari Express train derailed in West Midnapore district, about 150 km from Kolkata on Friday in a Maoist attack killing at least 655 passengers. Around 200 have been injured.

Five of the 13 derailed coaches were hit by a goods train soon after the attack. The Maoist-backed People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) has claimed responsibility for the attack. A number of trains in the region have been cancelled and some have been diverted after the incident.
The cancelled trains are Howrah-Barbil Jan Shatabdi, Howrah-Titlagarh Express, Tata Nagar-Howrah Express, Titlagarh Howrah Express. The diverted trains are Puri-Howrah-via KGP, MDN, Puri-New Delhi-via KGP, MDN,Howrah-Ahmedabad- via KGP, MDN, Porbander-Howrah-Via Tata, CNIPune-Howrah-Vias Tata, CNI CSTM-Howrah.
