vIndianz.com (28 Nov, 2009) — The Common Admission Test or CAT makes its online first appearance from today onwards till 8th December. The CAT has conventionally been a paper-pencil examination, which required about three-and-half hours to supervise and monitor. From now on, it will be a computerized test stretched over 10 days. As students get ready to take the online Common Admission Test, some of them are not pretty certain about the latest format of the test.
“We will face relentless difficulties in going through the tables, the mathematics portion and even going through the charts on the question paper in cyber space. Had it been a paper-pen examination, we could have gone through it in ease and could have responded to the questions sooner than an online examination,” said Rahul Jain, a CAT aspirant.
“We were preparing for a traditional means of test for last two years eyeing CAT 2009 and now just six months ahead of the d-day, they declare to make it online,” said another troubled candidate Suraj Mehta.
This year, the number of candidates has dipped 12 per cent compared to previous year. Experts blame it on the altered test format.
“The online test is definitely not encouraging for millions of brilliant students who come from smaller towns and villages as most of them do not have the capability to have enough money for standard mock tests online and that is why there is plunge in number of students,” Dr Amit Agrawal, a CAT expert.
While IIMs maintain that online CAT means an enormous savings of their financial resources in addition to discontinue expenditure of manpower for holding the test in convention mode, CAT aspirants don’t seem influenced and pleased with the reason.
