vIndianz.com(Sept. 07, 2009) — In this year the National Film Awards goes to south. Priyadarshan’s Tamil film ‘Kanchivaram’, was chosen as the best movie at the 55th National Film Awards 2009.
Tamil actor Prakash Raaj won the Best Actor award for his role in ‘Kanchivaram’, which depicts the lives of silk weavers of Kanchipuram during the pre-Independence era.
Kanchipuram is famous for silk sarees. People come from many places to the temple city to buy these silk sarees. But the plights of weavers who come out with these silk sarees are not rosy. This film set in the period between 1942 and 1957 and discusses emphasized caste issues that controlled the society during the period.
The Best Director’s award goes to filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan for his film ‘Naalu Pennungal’.
The first Tamil film “Kanchivaram” is to be selected in the competition section of International Film Festival of India (IFFI), starting Nov 22 in Goa.
The director Priyadarshan describes “Kanchivaram” as his best work yet. He has directed over 35 films in Malayalam and Hindi such as Hindi film “Biloo Barber”.
