vIndianz.com (15 Mar, 2010) — Avatar producer Jon Landau and director James Cameron have revealed that a sequel to Avatar may be on the cards along with other new 3D projects.
Speaking to reporters a week before the movie lost the Academy award for Best Director and Best Picture to the Iraqi war film “The Hurt Locker”, Landau said that it was the first week that they were not thinking about “Avatar”.
Along with a love story named “The Dive” and another movie titled “Fantastic Voyage”, a sequel to Avatar was also being considered by them. The producer-director duo were also planning to make a movie called “Battle Angel Alita”, Which would be based on a Japanese novel about a female cyborg’s journey to self-discovery. Landau said that it would take them six months to decide on which project would be taken up first.
However, it is certain that their next film will be in 3D. Landau opined that all movies would sooner or later go the 3D way.
Even though Avatar, which grossed $2.6 billion in ticket sales, won several Academy awards for its brilliant technical work, it was unable to scoop the major awards. Landau underplayed this fact by saying that the movie was aimed at the masses and not just for the 6000-odd members of the Academy.
Landau said that it was his belief that all screens, including that of mobile devices, computer monitors and television screens would adopt 3D technology. He added that officials from Skype, a leading Internet telephony firm, had expressed to him their interest in 3D technology.
He said that in the future, the audience might be able to select different plotlines and endings of a film.
